US WWI, US Navy Victory Medal & Mexico 1911-1917 Medal Group, Named

Quantity:
Price:  $245.00

Item #42954

Original era manufacture. Nice little lot of a sailor who served off of the coast of Mexico prior to WWI, and aboard transport ships during WWI.

The grouping consists of his US Navy Mexico 1911-1917 Campaign medal, serial number 8343, his WWI Victory Medal with Transport clasp, and a WWI Victory Medal from the town of Little Falls New York, named on the reverse to one, Francis Hughes.

The Little Falls New York medal comes in its original issue box, exhibiting typical light age and wear. The Mexico medal has a frayed ribbon and is missing its wrap suspension, being held now by a ribbon bar, the WWI Victory is sound, with normal wear and use.

Doing some quick searching on Ancestry, I found a Francis William Hughes, service number 1716394, who lived in Little Falls NY, born about 1897. He enlisted in the Navy in September of 1915, serving aboard the USS Jupiter April-November 1917, at various receiving ships and Naval Hospital stays, until his discharge from the USS Amphion in 1919.

The USS Jupiter was a transport ship, which carried a Marine detachment to Mexico in 1914, and served in the Gulf of Mexico until 1915. Of note, she was later converted into the US Navy's first Aircraft Carrier, and renamed USS Langley.

The USS Amphion, was a captured German liner (Koln) and served as a transport ship during WWI. Good potential for further research.
