Item #27743

Original era manufacture. This rather scarce piece of headgear was worn by soldiers of the Imperial Army for garrison and everyday wear during the time of the Emperor Meiji. Similar to the German style Jaeger Shako, this is of lacquered leather with a front visor. The original sweatband is in place along with the brown burlap adjustable lining. About 3/4's of the chinstrap remains with the two brass side buttons in place. The sunburst device is original but likely a replacement at some point. We have little reference material regarding this old helmet, although similar examples may be seen in the following texts, Japanese Military Uniforms 1841-1929 by Ritta Nakanishi, page 58, figure C, and, Imperial Japanese Army and Navy Uniforms & Equipment Volume 2 by Nakata, page 84, figure 84-11.
