Original era manufacture. According to Kiesling's, page 155, figure 454, this bayonet is a near match to the more commonly encountered 1842 pattern bayonet. Differences in the lock spring and press catch on this pattern setting it apart. Brass grip with a single steel securing screw, internal lock spring with a rectangular press button. The blade spine is nicely marked Mre, Imp'ale,Chat't,Aout, 1861, 1842. The blade shows scattered areas or staining and spotting but no deep corrosion and the cutting edge is unsharpened. Darkened steel patina to the S-shaped guard. Darkened steel scabbard missing one rivet at the throat. Several dents and creases along its length, blade still is easily removed.
