German WWII U-Boot Wall Plaque, U-766 (5 photos)
$150.00
|
Original era manufacture. 5x11 inch oval oak plaque with the profile of a U-Boot mounted on one side. The small brass "spades" emblem is stamped U 766 and below the boat is a brass rectangle stamped La Pallice. The U-766 was a type VIIC Boat and entered service with the Kriegsmarine in March of 1944. She sailed on five active patrols before the end of WWII. She was then taken over by the French Navy and renamed the Laubie where she served until decommissioned and broken up in 1963. The brass on this plaque is very likely from her and created during her destruction in the salvage yards. We have seen numerous examples of this type of "trench art" over the years, some more elaborate than others. We have a three dimensional brass model of the U-510 in our own collection. The stains you see on the plaqure are from ink, or paint, perhaps removable with paint thinner. It appears that at one time another emblem of some sort was attached to the upper right edge of the plaque as tiny mounting holes remain, in addition two tiny periscopes once adorned the conning tower as their mounting holes remain as well. In spite of its miniscule missing pieces the plaque remains a mute testament to the men who once served aboard U-766/Laubie with the brass used in its construction coming from a WWII German U-Boot.
